Israel's Foreign Ministry classifies South Africa as a medium threat and advises against non-essential travel. In early September 2026, protesters returned to Cape Union Mart stores in Cape Town after a court barred certain claims linking the retailer and its chairperson to Israel; a separate assault at a protest led to an arrest. Recorded antisemitism is comparatively low: the South African Jewish Board of Deputies counted 32 incidents nationally to the end of May 2026, the same as at that point in 2025 and fewer than in 2023 and 2024, with only one classified as physical assault, though Gauteng saw a localised rise in the second quarter. In August 2026 activist Mehmet Vefa Dag faced charges over antisemitic statements, including social media posts disparaging Jews, and the Cape South African Jewish Board of Deputies pursued a separate hate speech case against him. The greater risk to Jewish and Israeli visitors remains legal and diplomatic: Israel recalled its ambassador in 2023 and its chargé d'affaires was expelled in January 2026, leaving limited consular support, and Pretoria has said South African citizens who served in the IDF face arrest on return.
