Jewish/Israeli symbols should be kept to a minimum
Iceland has no record of violent antisemitic attacks and the Israeli government still lists it as a safe destination requiring only normal precautions, but public hostility toward Israel and visibly Jewish visitors has become more prominent. The national broadcaster RUV withdrew from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest over Israel's participation, joining Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland and Slovenia. A first-person account published in the Jewish Standard by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach describes a nearly two-week family visit during which he was repeatedly cursed and called a "baby killer," faced roughly seven hostile confrontations during a single 30-minute walk through Reykjavik, was assaulted twice - including once in a bar - and was targeted online, with the "Eye on Palestine" account calling for his assassination on Instagram and influencer Candace Owens urging that his group be evicted from the country. These are individual, unverified accounts rather than survey or police data, and they stand against a very different history: from 2003 to 2016 Iceland's first lady was Dorrit Moussaieff, a Jerusalem-born Jewish woman. Iceland's parliament also considered a bill in 2018 to ban non-medical circumcision of boys with prison penalties, which was not passed. Visibly Jewish or Israeli travelers should expect occasional verbal hostility, particularly in central Reykjavik, while ordinary tourism remains low-risk....
