Bansko, Bulgaria, has seen two significant antisemitic incidents in the past year. In February 2026, an Israeli tourist was severely assaulted and hospitalized with skull fractures. In August 2026, a verbal altercation outside a hotel between Bulgarian and Italian youths saw a group of Italian Jewish students subjected to antisemitic insults; Bulgarian authorities responded promptly and prevented the situation from escalating into physical violence. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry condemned the incident and the Commission for Protection against Discrimination said it would monitor the case closely. The Israeli government's travel advisory for Bulgaria remains 'safe to travel' with normal precautions, but given the severity of the February assault and the recurrence of antisemitic incidents, Jewish and Israeli travelers in Bansko should exercise caution....
