Recent incidents in Bulgaria have raised concerns for Jewish and Israeli travelers. In August 2025, a Holocaust memorial in Burgas was defaced with pro-Nazi stickers. In August 2026, a group of Italian Jewish teenagers faced antisemitic insults in an attempted attack in Bansko, which authorities prevented from escalating. The Bulgarian government has condemned these acts and is investigating them, and the Israeli government's travel advisory currently deems Bulgaria safe for travel with standard precautions. If you are considering a trip to Varna, go for it! As a Jewish person visiting, safety is always on my mind, but this city has felt entirely safe and welcoming. The people are friendly, the seaside is beautiful, and I've had zero safety concerns.
