After the September 20 Yom Kippur shooting outside a Belleville synagogue, which police called a targeted hate attack, Ottawa police increased patrols at synagogues and Jewish sites, though they reported no specific threat to Ottawa; Jewish students also described campus antisemitism at a September 24 news conference in Ottawa. In the past year, Ottawa has experienced a significant rise in antisemitic incidents, including targeted vandalism and harassment. A government-commissioned survey revealed that over 95% of Jewish university students reported experiencing or witnessing antisemitism on campus. In response, the Ontario Inspector General of Policing has mandated enhanced measures to address these hate-motivated incidents.
