In 2025, Winnipeg experienced a significant rise in hate-motivated crimes, with 112 incidents reported, more than doubling from 44 in 2024; 32 of these targeted Jewish individuals, making them the most affected group. In early 2026 the city saw a series of antisemitic incidents, including the vandalism of Congregation Shaarey Zedek synagogue with swastikas and the word "hate" on January 2, 2026, followed by the discovery of swastikas at Kelvin High School and Grant Park High School. The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg condemned the acts and the Winnipeg Police Service arrested a suspect on January 8, 2026; a 19-year-old man was also arrested for defacing properties with swastikas in the Charleswood neighborhood, and a December 2025 Hanukkah ceremony at Health Sciences Centre was disrupted by antisemitic slurs. The Jewish community has demonstrated resilience with increased synagogue attendance and community engagement, but the trend remains concerning and the Israeli government advises travelers to Canada to 'be cautious when traveling.'...
