Stay alert, keep symbols hidden, don’t identify as Jewish or Israeli
On the night of Yom Kippur, September 20–21, two Holocaust memorial stones in Trastevere were defaced with paint. Earlier in September, an antisemitic sticker was reported on the medical office plaque of a Rome Jewish community activist. In August, a 22-year-old French Jewish tourist wearing a kippah was assaulted twice in two days in Rome — pepper-sprayed in Piazza Cairoli and kicked by a group of four in Largo di Torre Argentina — amid shouts of "Free Palestine", and an elderly rabbi was assaulted in the Jewish Quarter. Rome also saw protests about Israel and a proposed antisemitism bill, and a march to the Vatican on September 22 denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza. Italy recorded 401 antisemitic incidents in the first half of 2026, with Rome and Milan the most affected cities. Stay alert near demonstrations and Jewish sites....
